Explaining Terminology

  1. Field:
  • A box or space where you can type in or select information on a webpage.
  • Also referred to as 'Input Field'

  1. Field Category versus Field Label:
  • The Field Category is the title that appears when Fields are grouped together.
  • In the examples below:
    • 'Burial Information' would be considered a Field Category.
    • 'Burial Type' & 'Burial Date' would be the Field Labels for each field within the 'Burial Information' category.

  1. Field Type:
  • Specifies the kind of data or information that can be entered into a field.
  • The 'Field Type' chosen will affect how the information can be entered.
  • Some examples of 'Field Type':

  • Example of 'Select From Options' Field:

  • Example of 'True or False' Field:

    • In the example above, you would select:
      • Yes, for 'True'
      • No for 'False'
      • 'Unknown' if it is neither true nor false.

  • Example of 'Date or Text' Field:

    • 'Date or Text' fields allow you to enter in either a date or text.
    • If you know the exact date you can enter the specific date.
    • If you don't, you can use text to explain that (rather than having to arbitrarily choose a date or leave the field blank)
